English

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Nelson Mandela

At St. Peter’s Catholic Primary School we believe that a successful English program is one in which speaking and listening, reading and viewing and writing are interconnected and taught both explicitly and through the context of our inquiry units.

At St Peter’s our Literacy is taught through a whole/small/whole group model for learning with planned, explicit instruction. Regular assessment identifies specific literacy learning required to ensure improved outcomes for every student.

Speaking and Listening

At St Peter’s we believe that oral language development is essential to establishing strong foundations for learning in English and therefore we are committed to developing our play based learning for our prep, year one and year two students.

Reading and Viewing

At St Peter’s Catholic Primary School we are committed to building our fluency, accuracy and comprehension of fiction and non-fiction texts. We believe in the importance of developing a broad vocabulary to enhance our reading comprehension.

Writing

At St Peter’s Catholic Primary School we build our knowledge and skills in writing a variety of genre, with explicit focus on the purpose, language features and text structures of these genre. In Years Three - Six we incorporate ‘Writer’s Notebook’ as a strategy to build independence as writers. This involves developing ideas around a chosen ‘seed’ to build an interesting text.

Literacy Intervention

Our literacy program includes intervention programs to support learners to achieve success. These programs are Reading Recovery and Levelled Literacy Intervention.
